NIX2023 | We Loved Every Minute!

Hold on tight folks, because the 2023 NIX Tattoo show in Toronto was a whirlwind weekend that brought tattoo generations together for three days of off-the-charts tattooing, reconnections with friends and legends, camaraderie and good vibes. All this, combined with the constant buzzing of tattoo machines at work, created an electric atmosphere that was truly unforgettable.

…And oh, what a show it was!

The atmosphere at NIX2023 was lively and buzzing with excitement even before the visitors arrived. Artists working the show were in high spirits and enjoying everything the city of Toronto had to offer.

As you made your way around the convention floor through the alleyways, each one named after legendary tattooing icons like Keith Stewart (who was Eikon’s first customer), Paul Rogers, Cliff Raven, Tony D'Anessa and quite a few others, you couldn’t help feel a wave of nostalgia wash over you. The spirit of the old-timers was definitely alive and well.

Speaking of legends, Jack Rudy himself made a comeback and many tattooers overcame their shyness to have a conversation, paying respect to those who came before them. It was a great reminder of the shared passion that binds artists and enthusiasts alike.

When we stepped out from behind the booth and into the crowds, the energy was infectious. There’s really no sweeter sound than buzzing tattoo machines signalling artists at work, sharing their creativity and passion.

This year the level of tattooing on display around the convention floor was far beyond expectations. The judging panel including Erin, and Peel were faced with the massive challenge of choosing the best work from a sea of incredible talent. The competition was fierce, let me tell you, as each artist pushed the limits of their art to create exceptional tattoos.

At the end of the day though, one artist stood out with his next-level skills and artistry —@rjuptowntattoo. RJ had been dreaming of this moment for years, and now, through sheer determination and passion, he claimed the coveted Best of Show award. It was a Realism piece with a "flash art” component that can only be described as mind-blowing - even RJ wasn’t sure how it would turn out. His triumph was truly a testament to his relentless dedication and spirit.

By the way, NIX2023 wasn't just about the present; it was a celebration of the past, a historic reunion of the OG “influencers” who shaped tattooing as we know it. The return of Brian Everett and Jack Rudy, their presence showcasing wisdom and experience, was met with tremendous admiration. And let's not forget the dynamic duo of Shotsie Gorman and his lovely wife, Christine, who traveled from New Jersey, and drew a sense of awe and respect. You could see the new generation paying homage to the icons who paved the way, soaking up their stories and insight.

From the awesome display of tattooing, to the vibrant energy that filled the Toronto Convention Center, this was a weekend that will be remembered for years to come. It was a moment, once again, when the tattoo community came together to share their passion and push the boundaries of what’s possible with ink and skin. A big shout out to organizers Dan Allaston, Milena Fusco and their crew for all their hard work putting on another brilliant show.
